Calamity Brains:
Army of Frankensteins is exactly as good as you would expect it to be.
This low-budget flick is purposefully over-the-top ridiculous to draw in the weirdos (like us) who hear a ridiculous premise and go, “Damn, that’s gotta be bad. I need to watch it immediately.” Sadly, it’s not nearly as fun or funny as it could have been. That’s not surprising at all, but it’s still a missed opportunity.
Army of Frankensteins is full of forced one-liners, pseudoscience, and seriously questionable choices. It’s also fairly offensive when it comes to both black people and Confederates, which is impressive I guess, but not really something to shoot for. The concept was creative, but in that sort of “what on Earth were you thinking?” kind of way. (This is another pitch meeting I wish I could have been around for: “What if Abraham Lincoln won the Civil War because of an army of Frankenstein monsters… from the future?!”)
This flick is pretty solidly in the “bad” category rather than “so bad it’s good,” but if you’re into dumb ridiculousness, you might laugh a few times. It wasn’t something I’d ever feel the need to watch again, but I didn’t feel the need to ask for my money back. Proceed with alcohol and our drinking game, and you might have some fun.
