Calamity Brains:
Club Dread is a ridiculous and fun take on the slasher subgenre. A lighthearted spoof, it happily stereotypes everyone and employs just about every trope imaginable to tell the tale of a deranged killer set loose on a private resort island to murder the tourists.
Bill Paxton steals the show as Coconut Pete, a thinly-veiled Jimmy Buffett ripoff who owns and runs the resort. As his cast of employees are slowly being picked off, they rush to discover the truth behind the murders before the tourists figure out what’s going on, creating a cheerfully wacky, Weekend at Bernie’s-esque situation. Bodies continue to pile up in over-the-top “accidents” as the remaining few try to stay alive.
Club Dread is definitely fun even without knowing all the horror tropes, but it’s better with an experienced eye. The sheer ridiculousness of the plot and effects make this dumb comedy thoroughly watchable, but it’s even better with beers and friends.
