Calamity Brains:
Like Silent Hill and Resident Evil, Doom is a movie based on a video game, and so has a definite cap on quality. But though Doom is more of a cheesy, action-packed ride than either of those, it’s still relatively polished and entertaining. Add in The Rock, and I’m a happy camper.
Doom actually does a fairly good job of putting together a coherent plot. It gives good reason for both mutants and military presence, and manages to maintain the kickass attitude of the games, if not quite capturing their tense atmosphere. Still, the effects are decent (and very gross), and there are a lot of direct references to the games that players will appreciate.
Like most movies based on video games, Doom isn’t classic cinema. But what it lacks in depth, it makes up for in style. Think of it like an action flick with horror monsters – all stupid fun and big explosions. If you like good old-fashioned monster-slaying action, Doom is a pretty good choice.
Calamity Brains’ Rating: B
