Calamity Brains:
Frequent readers will know I’m not a big fan of the Friday the 13th franchise. The early, supposedly scary movies are fairly boring to me, and the later ones generally don’t make much sense. But despite rating all of the series fairly low, I gave Jason Lives a few extra points. Why? Well, it’s one of the few movies in the franchise where I didn’t get bored.
That’s not to say Jason Lives is a good movie. It’s not. Fans of the early, slow burn slasher vibe will dislike the campiness of this movie and think it’s trying too hard. (It is.) Fans of the later entries in the series will say this one doesn’t go far enough. (It doesn’t.) But there is a bit of balance there. Somewhere in the mess of an overly-quizzical Jason, objectified male counselors, and teen romance-level sexual situations, Jason Lives manages to be sort of entertaining. It’s mostly a movie that you laugh at rather than with, but that can be fun, too.
Along with the campy tone, Jason Lives involves a decent kill count, no boobs, and has the distinction of being the only camp movie in the series to actually feature campers. It’s fairly ridiculous, but hey – sometimes that’s why we watch horror.
Calamity Brains’ Rating: B-
