Calamity Brains:
Throughout its runtime, Night of the Creeps rarely reaches the level of “good,” but it’s still pretty watchable. It’s a decent background movie for a party or chatting with friends – just enough silly content to draw your attention now and then, but not quite enough to hold it.
With a ridiculous backstory and a zombie-esque alien invasion plot, Night of the Creeps had a lot of potential. Unfortunately, the movie focuses way too much on bland coed couple Chris (Jason Lively) and Cynthia (Jill Whitlow), rather than their more interesting supporting cast. One of the better characters, J.C. (Steve Marshall), gets way too little screen time compared to his overly boring roommate Chris. And while I enjoyed Tom Atkins‘ hardboiled detective novel-type character, the movie also fails to fully capitalize on the inherent greatness of that role.
But I’ll admit – I had fun watching Night of the Creeps. There’s a silly backstory, meta jokes, and heavy flamethrower usage. I regret that it wasn’t better, but it’s not the worst of the ’80s pack to throw on.
Calamity Brains’ Rating: B
