Calamity Brains:
As I watch a new movie, I generally take notes of things I find scary, funny, or interesting. It helps with writing these reviews later, and offers a balanced view of what in the movie was worthwhile.
My last note for The Screaming Skull was “That was stupid.” By far, my favorite part of the movie was the voiceover warning at the beginning.
Though the actors all did fairly well, there was only so much they could do when hampered by the plot. While I realize there’s only so much story you can fit into an hour, the filmmakers should make an effort to have the story make sense. I suppose the overall arc of it was fine, but there were a number of what I’m guessing are supposed to be plot twists and red herrings that just confused matters. In addition, one of the main plot points is Jenni’s mental illness, which everyone else is very concerned over… and yet for the first 70% of the movie, all of her fears seem quite justified and not at all crazy.
The special effects were all fairly mediocre as well. I give older movies some allowances for special effects, but all of these – prominently featuring the titular skull – were largely just gravity doing its work. Not exactly terror material.
Feel free to skip this one.
