Calamity Brains:
Slither is not a movie for the faint of stomach. Between the special effects and several plot points, there’s enough gross-out potential to mean it might be inadvisable for some people to eat during the movie.
The effects are actually an oddly mixed bag; the makeup and CG for actors is pretty good, but the creature and alien effects are lacking. Still, the tentacles and boils succeeded more than once in making me uncomfortable in their sheer grossness. (However, since I already found Grant pretty creepy, it took much longer than it should have for his makeup to gross me out further. Sorry, Michael Rooker, but I will forever remember you covered in sweat with poop chocolate on your hands.)
Outside of the special effects, the main thing to recommend Slither is the star power of the cast. You’ll recognize just about everyone in the movie (Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, and Jenna Fischer to name a few). Unfortunately, most of the actors aren’t serious drama types, and the movie isn’t quite a comedy, so the audience is left in a weird middle ground. You can’t quite take Slither seriously, but it’s also not that funny.
I hate saying this about a movie that stars Nathan Fillion and Elizabeth Banks, but the overall effect of Slither is “meh.” It’s not a bad watch, but the effects are more interesting than the movie itself.
