Calamity Brains:
Horror is traditionally a male-aimed and dominated genre, so it’s always interesting to see a horror flick targeted specifically at women. The Witches of Eastwick definitely fits that bill – there really aren’t any male characters for audience members to see themselves as except for Jack Nicholson (and guys, please don’t tell me if you can comfortably imagine yourselves as Jack Nicholson). But for all the female targeting, it’s still surprisingly watchable for a larger audience, and contains more than a few moments that’ll stay with you a long time.
Watching three middle-aged women be inexplicably seduced by Jack Nicholson may not sound like the best plot ever, but it’s fairly engaging. It helps that the women in question are Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer, making the movie fairly babe-heavy. And while the women’s inner thoughts may not resonate well with the male viewer, it’s hard not to enjoy the sheer ridiculousness of Jack Nicholson soothing their midlife crises by making them his harem.
The Witches of Eastwick also has fairly good practical effects. They’re kept to a minimum early on, sprinkled in, but as the women develop their powers, the effects become more and more chaotic. All of the actors really sell the magical moments, but none so well as Jack Nicholson, who has an extremely memorable performance towards the movie’s climax. Horror fans will also enjoy seeing some famous faces sprinkled in amongst the scenes – Richard Jenkins and Carel Struycken make appearances.
Though it may seem lighthearted on the surface, Eastwick definitely contains some of the darker elements of horror as well. It’s a very interesting watch, and holds up well even in the era of special effects.
