Calamity Brains:
One of The Asylum‘s better movies (it’s that Glenn Miller/Scotty Mullen combo working for them again), Zoombies falls squarely under the category of “so bad it’s good.” There’s a ridiculous plot, entertainingly bad special effects, and lots of poor decision-making. The only thing it’s really missing is boobs, but there’s enough else going on that you don’t really mind the lack.
In Zoombies, logic and physics both weep. There are random explosions. Vaseline counts as first aid. And most importantly of all, the entire premise of the movie is that there’s some strange virus corrupting the animals. It starts with monkeys, and can spread to every other animal (including birds) – but not humans. Because monkeys and birds are more closely related than monkeys and humans. Obviously.
There’s also a wide range of quality in the special effects. The CGI animals are pretty good for a made for TV movie; in fact, the monkeys in the opening scene are actually very well done. But that only holds true as long as the animals aren’t interacting with the actors. As soon as the animals are doing some terrorizing, all bets are off. I’m pretty sure the giraffe head is actually a hand puppet in one of the scenes.
To go along with the questionable effects, the acting is generally pretty laughable. The best actor by far is the six-year-old child (who is frankly pretty adorable). But again, the effect is mostly entertaining.
In sum, Zoombies is the perfect movie to throw on and laugh about with friends. Quality TV it’s not. But it is damn fun.
