Calamity Brains:
The second movie in the Jennifer series, 2 Jennifer is like Creep for people who thought Creep was too high-budget. Two aspiring movie moguls, Spencer (Hunter Johnson) and Mack (David Coupe) set out to make a sequel to To Jennifer (2013) – it’s very meta – but Spencer is hiding something from his partner, even as they recruit their lead actress (Lara Jean).
This mumblegore flick embraces its cheap roots; the entire story is filmed with iPhones. That often provides the audience with interesting angles and creatively bad shots, but it’s problematic at times – more than once the movement of the phone made me nauseous (and I’m not prone to motion sickness). But the use of the phones for filming underscores the planned nature of Spencer’s entire venture.
2 Jennifer does creepy very well. Even though many scenes are over-the-top, the movie still unsettles its audience. Occasional music does a great job of adding to the already suspenseful progression of Spencer’s plot. Though this style of movie is not my thing, I have to give the filmmakers props for their careful handling of atmosphere and clever approach to creating a sequel. There’s also a fun cameo by Felissa Rose, which helps keep things moving in the sometimes-slow early parts.
Honestly, I probably didn’t need to write more of a review than just the first sentence. If you liked Creep, give the Jennifer series – and this one in particular – a chance. If Creep wasn’t your thing, you should probably steer clear.
