Calamity Brains:

Grabbers is one of those disappointing movies with a fabulous premise and a confusingly serious tone. The idea of an alien allergic to alcohol that can only be fought while you’re drunk is a plot that practically screams to be a horror-comedy – and yet Grabbers is played oddly straight, choosing instead to focus on an alcoholic’s redemption rather than the inherently ridiculous premise.

While one cop on a tiny Irish island goes on holiday, rookie Lisa (Ruth Bradley) is sent in to help out the other. Ciarán (Richard Coyle) is a drunken mess, and kind of a jerk, but Lisa warms him up as they investigate a series of suspicious incidents that eventually lead them to conclude that an alien lifeform is loose on the island and they are all in danger. Cut off from the mainland until morning, their only hope is to barricade the locals in the bar and instigate a drunken lockdown to keep everyone safe.

And despite all of that, most of the movie focuses on Ciarán and his relationship with both his past and the new cop. What little chemistry they have never really comes to fruition as the plot thickens, and the whole movie is really a let down – some cool moments are not enough to rescue it from the audience’s knowledge of what could have been.
