Calamity Brains:
Attack of the Giant Leeches is your typical campy, low-budget creature feature from the ‘50s. The quality is poor, acting is mediocre, and the creatures laughable – which is, of course, part of the fun.
This particular flick (with Roger Corman as EP) stands out a little thanks to its annoying music and particularly terrible creatures. I’m not sure anyone who worked on this movie has ever seen a leech… but even if they had, I doubt the costumes would have been any better. And yes, I mean costumes. There’s no puppetry, claymation, or camera tricks here: our giant leeches are human swimmers flailing around in poorly-constructed leech costumes. It’s exactly as bad as it sounds.
The movie’s appeal, such as it is, is helped along by the casting of Yvette Vickers as Liz. Her stellar legs are good enough reason to watch just about anything. Still, be forewarned – this movie is campy and bad, and will definitely require alcohol.
Calamity Brains’ Rating: C-
