Calamity Brains:
Rocky Horror is one of the best litmus tests I know. If I meet someone who likes it, there’s a good chance we’re going to get along. (And I say that as a grouchy old person.) That of course doesn’t mean I automatically dislike people who don’t enjoy RHPS; I just don’t understand them.
For those who don’t know, Rocky Horror is a creepy, campy, bizarre, delightful, singing, dancing, mad sciencing, romancing romp. The plot makes no sense; the characters are purposefully one-dimensional; the effects are silly and primarily involve flashes of light. But in spite of all that (or perhaps because of all that), it is a lot of fun. Though plot points include aliens, dissection, torture, cannibalism, rape, and murder, it’s still fairly lighthearted and meant more as exploration than titillation.
To enjoy RHPS, you’ll need a high tolerance for weird and campy. It’ll also help if you enjoy musicals and Tim Curry. But it’s one of those films everyone should see at least once, even if they hate it.
I hope you enjoy it, though. That way we’ll get along.
