Calamity Brains:
Seed of Chucky follows in the utterly ridiculous footsteps of Bride of Chucky without missing a beat. The series gets increasingly bizarre as Chucky (Brad Dourif) and Tiffany (Jennifer Tilly) are accidentally resurrected by their gentle, gender-confused child (Billy Boyd) and immediately set out to claim new human bodies. This time, their preferred victim is Jennifer Tilly, her beau, and a child she might bear for them.
If that sounded confusing or upsetting, hang on to your hats, kids: it just gets weirder from there.
Because Jennifer Tilly is, of course, the voice of Tiffany, Seed of Chucky gets real meta real fast. She spends most of the movie talking to (and about) herself, which results in some delightfully ridiculous exchanges. It’s really impossible to understate just how much of this movie is carried by Jennifer Tilly. If you take no other notice of this movie, you should at least be proud of her ability to handle any of the script without laughing.
So while Jennifer Tilly is getting meta, the dolls are living in her house and planning to impregnate, then possess, her. Both Chucky and Tiffany have also sworn to their child, Glen/Glenda, that they will stop killing and be a normal family (well, minus the whole “possessing a movie star” thing), so there’s a very 12-step vibe to the movie as well. (And don’t worry, gore fans – both Chucky and Tiffany fail miserably at keeping their promises.) In between all the horrifying family bonding, things inevitably go sideways. Chucky and Tiffany realize that they want different things out of life; their kid has a (long overdue) psychological break.
Idk, guys. I have no idea what Don Mancini was on when he write this movie, but it was definitely on the banned substances list. Meanwhile, we have a definitive entry into our WTF category. Seed of Chucky isn’t for everyone – or maybe even anyone – but you should see it if only to understand the rest of us when we get inarticulate at the mention of this entry into the Chucky/Child’s Play series.
