Calamity Brains:
I found Trick or Treats both entertaining and deeply unsatisfying. On the one hand, I loved the subplot of a child Houdini-in-the-making tormenting his babysitter while a killer (Peter Jason) stalks them both. On the other hand the main slasher plot really had no redeeming features. Every bit of it was hackneyed and forced; even with the fun of the subplot, nothing about this movie ever felt fresh or new. On the whole, it’s fairly offensive, and definitely has more than its share of snooze-worthy moments.
The few bright spots aside from mini-Houdini include a guillotine, females doing technical film editing… and that’s about it. The twist ending is in no way surprising; the characters are all unpleasant at best. There really isn’t much to recommend this movie over the vast array of other ’80s slashers and plenty of reasons to avoid it. You won’t hate yourself for putting it on, but you’ll definitely want friends and a drink to get through it without yawning.
Calamity Brains’ Rating: C
