Calamity Brains:
Zombie Croc is not worth your time. I’m honestly not sure why it was worth the filmmakers’ time, either. Usually with D-level horror movies, you at least get a sense of the story the filmmakers wanted to tell (or the money they hoped to make), but Zombie Croc is so jumbled that I’m not even sure what the desired end result was.
Nobody in the movie can act, which matches up well with the poor scriptwriting. All action is very fake and lackluster, and reminiscent more of kids putting on a play in their backyard than actual combat. The cinematography is also weird – like someone playing with a new camera and trying to look cool rather than someone with a plan. The whole movie is deliberately washed out and covered in film scratches, which might have made sense in an artsy or throwback piece, but just seems bizarre here. Add in some hixploitation and the “magical Negro” elements and you’ve got a mess.
There are two reasons I didn’t fail Zombie Croc: the music and the croc. The music was actually halfway decent, and did a much better job at setting the tension level than music in comparable films. The croc, while laughable, was at least interesting. It looks like the head is a prop made out of paper mache – which, while ridiculous, is still a nice change of pace. CGI is so cheap now that movie usually opt for bad special effects instead of bad practical effects, and it’s refreshing to see something different, no matter how bad it is.
This D-level creature feature isn’t worth your time, even with alcohol. It tries way too hard and always fails. Find a better way to spend your evening.
